Origin-independent sum over states simulations of magnetic and electronic circular dichroism spectra via the localized orbital/local origin method

چکیده
Although electronic and magnetic circular dichroism (ECD, MCD) spectra reveal valuable details about molecular geometry and electronic structure, quantum-chemical simulations significantly facilitate their interpretation. However, the simulated results may depend on the choice of coordinate origin. Previously (Štěpánek and Bouř, J. Comput. Chem. 2013, 34, 1531), the sum-over-states (SOS) methodology was found useful for efficient MCD computations. Approximate wave functions were "resolved" using time-dependent density functional theory, and the origin-dependence was avoided by placing the origin to the center of mass of the investigated molecule. In this study, a more elegant way is proposed, based on the localized orbital/local origin (LORG) formalism, and a similar approach is also applied to generate ECD intensities. The LORG-like approach yields fully origin-independent ECD and MCD spectra. The results thus indicate that the computationally relatively cheap SOS simulations open a new way of modeling molecular properties, including those involving the origin-dependent magnetic dipole moment operator.

Computation of magnetic circular dichroism by sum-over-states summations
Magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) spectroscopy has been established as a convenient method to study electronic structure, in particular for small symmetric organic molecules. Newer applications on more complex systems are additionally stimulated by the latest availability of precise quantum-chemical techniques for the spectral simulations. In this work, a sum over states (SOS) summation is reex...
متن کاملRelation between molecular electronic structure and nuclear spin-induced circular dichroism
The recently theoretically described nuclear spin-induced circular dichroism (NSCD) is a promising method for the optical detection of nuclear magnetization. NSCD involves both optical excitations of the molecule and hyperfine interactions and, thus, it offers a means to realize a spectroscopy with spatially localized, high-resolution information. To survey the factors relating the molecular an...
متن کاملExploring the microscopic origin of magnetic anisotropies with X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) spectroscopy
Symmetry breaking and bonding at interfaces leads to a variety of anisotropy phenomena in transition metal sandwiches and multilayers. The charge density, the spin density and the orbital moment become anisotropic. These e!ects can be studied by the X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) technique which senses the local anisotropy of charge, spin and angular momentum around an atom that is ex...

متن کاملOptical and magneto-optical studies on magnetic-phase transition of CeSb and CeBi
We have observed the magnetic-phase transitions of CeSb and CeBi by a magnetic circular dichroism spectroscopy in the infrared region. The phase boundary is similar to that detected by neutron scattering. The optical spectra re#ect the electronic structures in the ordered states. The electronic structure and also the origin of the magnetic transition are discussed. ( 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. ...
